Summary

A grumpy yet loveable man finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves in next door。

Meet Ove。 He's a curmudgeon, the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window。 He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse。 People call him the bitter neighbor from hell, but must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?

Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness。 So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul。 All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents' association to their very foundations。

Very heartwarming and sweet。 Ove is a character who reminds me of my grandpa, and I loved that despite his grumpiness, the author is still able to make him a loveable character。

I’ve never had a book give me such an emotional reaction as this one。 I loved it from beginning to end。 Very well written。 I can not wait to read more of his works!

Some stories are meant to be toldOne of the few books outside of SciFi that I just fell in love with。 The characters and the story just flow and to think I picked up this book because I wanted to read the book before I saw the bloody movie。 Now I don't want to watch the movie cause I know it can't live up to the book。 If you haven't read it, you need to。 Some stories are meant to be toldOne of the few books outside of SciFi that I just fell in love with。 The characters and the story just flow and to think I picked up this book because I wanted to read the book before I saw the bloody movie。 Now I don't want to watch the movie cause I know it can't live up to the book。 If you haven't read it, you need to。 。。。more

Darn it, this book made me cry。I just love this book and Backman's writing。 In one page, he can make me laugh, cry, and then laugh again。 The characters are just so vivid and I just KNOW what types of people they are and how they will act and what they will say。 The people portrayed in this book are people we have somehow encountered throughout our lives and it just makes it all so much real and relatable。Trigger warnings for suicide attempts! I read Anxious People and struggled to get into it for the first half。 I decided to Audible this one and I think it was perfect! This was such an incredible story。 I finished while cooking dinner, crying my eyes out - happy and sad tears。 I really couldn't have loved it more。 I read Anxious People and struggled to get into it for the first half。 I decided to Audible this one and I think it was perfect! Funny and heartwarming。 I recognized my own grandfather in Ove and enjoyed it that much more as a result。

I loved the way the story of Ove unfolded。 We learn the complexity of a grumpy, inflexible man as the narrative weaves between present and past。 The other characters, mostly residents of his community, are also colorful。 The book has humor and seriousness。

Patience

Loved this book! It took me 2 tries to finish it and it was very worth the effort。 Makes me want to be part of a bigger community。

Ove happens to be the simplest yet most complex, the funniest yet most irritable and the grumpiest yet most loveable human。 It's hard for him to not be one of those characters we wish to be friends with in real life。 Ove happens to be the simplest yet most complex, the funniest yet most irritable and the grumpiest yet most loveable human。 It's hard for him to not be one of those characters we wish to be friends with in real life。 。。。more

Character driven, heartwarming, funny and contemplative without being trite。

Oh such a beautiful book。 It was like an adult version of the movie Up。。。 With a cantankerous old man at the centre of it, and the love he slowly allows back into his life。 I enjoyed this one so much!

So glad I met OveOve is annoying, stubborn, opinionated, and lovable all in one interesting man。 The people in his life are very different yet each one brings delight to the reader。 Great ending but now I am finished reading and miss Ove already。

The sweetest book! Minus one star because of a really excessive use of simile, but it was a very tender story。

I laughed。 I cried。 I loved this book。 The only thing I wasn't fan of were the last 2 or 3 chapters that felt a bit unnecessary and too polished。 Undoubtedly one of the best reda this year so far。 I laughed。 I cried。 I loved this book。 The only thing I wasn't fan of were the last 2 or 3 chapters that felt a bit unnecessary and too polished。 Undoubtedly one of the best reda this year so far。 。。。more

Ove reminds me of the man in UP。 I absolutely loved his story and gave it 5 stars, since it made me both laugh and cry out loud, a rare winning combination of wit and sentiment。

OMG, I loved this book。 So good。

I think it's a book that you'd only love if you manage to read it cover to cover。 I mean, it took almost one-third of the entire book before the absurdity of the third person narration finally started to grow on me。 Nevertheless, it hit me like a damn bus when I finally finished the book😭, because I didn't expect how attached I'd get to all the characters。。 I absolutely adored Ova and the cat, and of course Ova and Parvaneh。 I think it's a book that you'd only love if you manage to read it cover to cover。 I mean, it took almost one-third of the entire book before the absurdity of the third person narration finally started to grow on me。 Nevertheless, it hit me like a damn bus when I finally finished the book😭, because I didn't expect how attached I'd get to all the characters。。 I absolutely adored Ova and the cat, and of course Ova and Parvaneh。 。。。more

This is the first Fredrick Backman novel I have read (listened to), and it will not be the last! I do enjoy stories that revolve around character-building, and this does so in a lovely, rather quaint way。 It touches on confusing human responses to death and tragedy, grief and anger and angst, all without losing the positive vibe and humor evident throughout。 Very enjoyable。

Melissa Girnau

Such a heartwarming story。

Claire

Memorable characters and interesting setting, but writing felt too cliche and at times implausible。
